Abstract
Fuels are very essential for automobile and jet engines in terms of combustion efficiency and emission characteristics. Deep understanding and extensive knowledge about conventional petroleum-derived fuels as well as their alternative counterparts are of great significance for better engine design and optimization. This chapter will introduce a variety of alternative fuels used in internal combustion engines and gas turbine engines, followed by the comparison of different fuels regarding their gaseous and particulate matter emissions from these engines. Detailed analysis of emission formation mechanisms are provided to explain the experimental data collected from a wide range of existing literature.
