Abstract

This paper proposes a novel weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm for a single static source localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using time difference of arrival (TDOA). Owing to the nonlinearity of the original distance difference equations derived from TDOA, it is difficult to estimate the location directly. So we first establish a new linearizing approach to give a closed-form solution. By taking a node as reference, all the equations share the same term as the range between the source and the reference node. Utilizing simple algebraic means, the same term can be eliminated with equations transformed into linear formulas. We further analyze the noise component in the formulas and develop a WLS solution to estimate the single source's coordinate. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing closed-form GS method.
