Abstract

Fractal coding is a recent and effective compression technique based on self-similarity of images. However, its encoding time is very high. In addition, when 2-D fractal coding is applied directly to field-sequential stereo video sequences, the high vertical-frequencies of stereo image pairs are suppressed. This makes the depth perception defective. In this paper, a survey of fractal coding development, theoretical principles, improved methods and characteristics of the application is proposed. Two main approaches, from still image coding technique to fractal video coding, are proposed. For the encoding time and quality of decoding needs to be improved, the recent improved methods focus on reducing coding time, combining block-based division with DCT/BFT, wavelet method and neighborhood vector.
