A prospect of nuclear powered aviation propulsion

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

A literature survey on state-of-art of nuclear powered aviation propulsion around world is presented. GE and P&W had validated feasibility of nuclear powered aviation propulsion by a plan named ANP. The unmanned aerial vehicle and cruise missile are considered the most promised field of nuclear powered aviation propulsion. The key technologies are lightening of nuclear shielding system, speed and efficiency of heat change, thermodynamic system and new structure. If steam is used as media and two loop closed cycle is used to driven propeller, there is no technical obstacle to design steam turbine and power system. Steam flux is determined by two key factor, consuming quantity of steam and time taken to complete heat change cycle.
