Abstract

Surge is one of the main dynamic instabilities that limites the operation of centrifugal compressors. In order to avoid disastrous consequences caused by the surge and control the surge actively, a rapid surge detection technology is required. In this paper, a novel surge detection method based on the magnetically suspended centrifugal compressor (MSCC) using adaptive notch filter is proposed, and the structure of the MSCC system is presented. Moreover, a new judgment criterion for surge detection based on the estimated frequency signal of adaptive notch filter (ANF) is proposed. Experimental results on different MSCC systems show that the method can detect the surge several seconds before it develops into modified surge with no extra sensors and little priori knowledge of the pneumatics parameters of the system, which also demonstrate the rapidity and universality of the proposed method.
