Abstract

Variable transmission geared turbofan is a new type of low-cost engine configuration: a one-spool turbofan equipped with variable transmission gearbox between core engine and fan. This paper discusses possible mechanical configuration of variable transmission gearbox and puts forward corresponding control method to fully develop potential of this novel configuration. Considering operating characteristics of variable transmission geared turbofan, light business jet engine is the top possible application to balance design difficulty of gearbox and benefits of introducing new configuration. In a typical light business jet engine design, variable transmission geared turbofan is assessed and compared to a conventional two-spool turbofan. In comparison, engine has up to 5% cruise SFC benefit and shows potential in weight reduction and structure simplification.
