Abstract

This paper provides an overview on the DLR air transportation system analysis methodology. Based on systems engineering principles a modular multi-level, multi-fidelity, multi-perspective evaluation framework has been set up. The architecture of the system analysis can be tailored to the specific problems under investigation. The evaluation process is transparent with a set of underlying assumptions and maintains a scientific level by extensive involvement of subject-matter experts. Requirements for technology integration and an evaluation metric are derived on the background of future scenarios. In subsequent steps the technology to be analyzed is integrated and simulated within its relevant context of the air transportation system. Using the calculated performance measures the technology is compared to a reference based on economic, ecologic and where appropriate social metrics.
