Abstract

This is a new method for terrain rendering based on two-level model. In preprocessoring time, it generates the TIN mesh as the coarse level in order to represent the profile of terrain. A paging thread is setup to put invariable number of patches around camera into memory to represent the detailed level in running time. It uses Geomipmap method to organize these patches. But it uses the inpainting method to deal with crack between patches and uses image fusion to treat with popping at the boundary between the coarse level and detailed level. The operations to deal with crack and popping are taken in image space, avoiding complex geometry transition. Experiment shows that this algorithm can get good balance between visual effect and terrain rendering speed.
