Abstract

The aim of this paper was to investigate the contributions of mechanical factor and biological factor to the osteoporotic process of cancellous bone. Based on the physiology of bone remodeling, a mechanical-biological factor coupled computational model at Basic Multicellular Units (BMUs) level was put forward, which can describe the osteoporotic process of cancellous bond with time course. By adjusting the parameters in the model representative of mechanical factor and biological factor respectively, the bone loss patterns of menopausal women were simulated. The results were consistent with the clinical data presented in the literature (Recker et al.). The computational model put forward in this paper is capable of describing the osteoporotic process in cancellous bone. Furthermore, it can provide theoretical basis and computational method for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.
