Abstract

The spur face gear is a novel drive that is widely applied in national defense. To improve the production efficiency and meshing properties of spur face gears, a hobbing method for spur face gears with a bidirectional modification is proposed. To obtain the tooth surface of the gear by hobbing, the basic worm of the spherical hob and the tooth surface equation by hobbing were established. To obtain a convex surface, modification along the contact trace and contact line was proposed. Then, a hobbing method for face gears with bidirectional modification was studied based on current machine tools. Therefore, a prototype was produced, which illustrates the feasibility of manufacturing the design. Detection methods revealed that the maximum error of an unmodified tooth surface is −11.2 μm, and the maximum deviation errors along the contact trace and contact line are −2.7 μm and −2.1 μm, respectively. The results show that hobbing is an effective method for bidirectional modification of gear teeth.
