A Dynamic Fault Tree method for availability assessment of the repairable gas transmission system

Abstract

Modeling, evaluating the gas transmission system and calculating its availability and throughput rate is required in oil and gas industries. However, the complexity of the repairable gas transmission system makes it inaccurate to model and analyze by traditional approaches. Especially when there are common cold standby components and some of constituent parts are multi-state. A new system modeling approach is proposed, which is combined with system structure analyzing and Dynamic Fault Tree (DFT). Traditional DFT is widely used to model a system with dynamic characters but it is difficult to express the dynamic behaviors of the system appropriately. Hence an extended DFT approach is applied for system modeling. A new ‘k-out-of-n cold standby gate’ and a new ‘flow gate’ is proposed to describe the system. A discrete-event simulation method based on Monte-Carlo is provided, in analyzing the model, to estimate the availability and the throughput rate of the system. An algorithm with the consideration of maintenance for ‘k-out-of-n cold standby gate’ and ‘flow gate’ is designed. Generally, the method can be used for optimizing design schemes, which is applied to estimate a real gas transmission system.
