Abstract

A series of characteristic experiments were conducted on a single-stage low-speed compressor to investigate the stability enhancement effect of metal wire mesh casing treatment. The sensitivity parameters such as axial position, axial width, and count of the metal mesh were studied. The optimal axial position for a 25 mm groove width is at 25% chord length from the leading edge of the blade tip (stall margin can be increased by 24.52%), while for a 15 mm groove width, it is at 16.7% chord length (stall margin can be increased by 13.15%). The increase in groove width is beneficial for stability improvement but also increases efficiency loss. As the mesh size increases, the stability enhancement effect decreases and the efficiency loss decreases. Further exploration of its stability enhancing mechanism was conducted through numerical simulation from the perspectives of flow details and blade loading, and it was found that it improved the flow near the tip region and redistributed the rotor tip blade loading.
