Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

As a significant cryptographic primitive, ring signatures offer a way to protect the signer’s identity privacy while ensuring the integrity of the signed content and authentication by concealing the signer within a group of peer participants. However, traditional ring signature techniques have shown limitations in flexibility and comprehensiveness when faced with diverse application requirements. This study systematically reviews the key functional properties of ring signature technology and categorizes them according to their roles within the signature structure. A novel classification framework is proposed, dividing the key properties of ring signatures into three major categories: intrinsic key properties, external auxiliary functions, and aggregate properties. The focus is placed on reviewing relevant research results on (1) intrinsic key properties such as scalability and revocability, (2) external auxiliary functions like linkability, external revocability, accountability, and traceability, and (3) the aggregate properties of digital signatures and ring signatures. This paper outlines the research progress of ring signatures in terms of property extension, performance enhancement, and security improvement, and summarizes the key challenges and pressing issues that remain in this field.
