Abstract
The coal-based carbon foam is open cell, porous carbon with interconnected pores and possesses characteristics such as high strength, light weight, tailorable thermal and electrical conductivity, low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), high temperature resistant, strong designability and machinability, etc., which shows tremendous advantage over other materials when used to manufacture carbon foam-based polymer matrix composites tooling products. In this paper, firstly, the development of carbon foam was reviewed. Secondly, the development of carbon foam tooling was reviewed. Thirdly, the properties of carbon foam tooling were summarized. Fourthly, the key techniques in the design and manufacture of carbon foam tooling were generalized. Finally, some suggestions for the investigation of carbon foam tooling were put forward.
