Abstract
Belief reliability theory is a newly proposed reliability theory in recent years. In belief reliability theory, performance margin is a core concept for reliability measurement and analysis. How to identify critical performance parameters and analyze their margins during the product design process have become important issues to be primarily resolved. Therefore, a new formal analysis method, called function, performance and margin analysis (FPMA) is proposed, to clarify the relationship between product function and performance, identify critical performance parameters and thresholds, and to provide information and cognitive foundation for the following margin modeling process. This paper elaborated on the connotation and basic flow of FPMA in detail and clarifies its application value in the product life cycle. A case study of an electrical connector's FPMA is also carried out. The results show that the FPMA can fully explore the reliability-related information of products, which is conducive to truly integrating reliability into the products' design process.
