Abstract

To avoid the blockage of air holes in the photonic crystal fiber (PCF) during the oblique end face preparation process, a mechanical explanation for the parameter setting of PCF angle cutting was given, based on the principle of fracture mechanics and material mechanics. The relationship of the torsion angle and the endface angle was derived. The angle cutting system was optimized and upgraded, and the endface angle cutting was realized from 0° to 10°. The cutting quality was also evaluated. The effect of reducing back reflection by different endface angles was tested, in which the results show that the angle of >8° reduces the back reflection effectively. The endface of PCF was observed by a charge coupled device (CCD) system. The air holes of the endface cut by the angle cutting system were not blocked, which indicates that this method is qualified.
