Abstract

Sensitized by SF6,Fe nano-particles (20-40 nm) containing 70.6 wt% γ-Fe were prepared by CW CO2 laser-induced decomposition of Fe(CO)5. An oxidation study of the Fe nanoparticles was made at 200°C- 650°C. At 200° - 300°C γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were formed; above 300°C the γ-Fe2O3 phase gradually oxidized to α-Fe2O3. The oxide powders formed through oxidation remained nanometer in size. The Fe and its oxide particles were characterized by TEM, electron diffraction and XRD.
